Grande Prairie, Alta – The Grande Prairie Airport is pleased to welcome the Fairview Aircraft Restoration Society and a historic World War II Patrol Bomber known as the Canso PBY.
This plane began its life in 1944 as a World War II Patrol Bomber flying over the North Atlantic in search of enemy submarines that were attacking convoy ships carrying troops and supplies between North America and Europe.
After the war, the aircraft was repurposed to haul freight, passengers and fresh fish in and out of northern Canada. In the late 1970’s it was converted into a wildfire water bomber and was then heavily damaged by fire in 2001.
The Canso PBY was eventually salvaged by a small group of volunteers and after 10 years of restoration has returned to flying condition.
On May 29, 2018, the aircraft will be on display at the Grande Prairie Airport at the Happy Gas hangar. The public is welcome to tour the aircraft from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm and donations will be accepted at the door.
